Charis and the Georgia Center for the Book are bringing the legendary Marlon James to Decatur, and he’s going to be in conversation with our very own Doug Jones to celebrate James’s new novel, “The Disappearers.” This isn’t just a book talk, it’s a deep dive into a powerful story that’s sure to leave an impression.
“The Disappearers” is a propulsive novel that takes you back to 1980s Jamaica, unraveling the tragic consequences of a gay man’s murder. Imagine this: it’s 1988, and eight men, strangers to each other but united by the truth of being “battyman,” or gay, in Jamaica, are rehearsing a play. They’re all navigating the dangers that come with that truth. Then, one night, a mob attacks them, brutally killing one of the men. This book isn’t just about the violence, though. It’s about what happens next, how the survivors grapple with the hatred and rage, how their bodies and spirits heal, and the compromises they’re forced to make to just survive. It’s a dramatic page-turner that also bravely explores queer life in Jamaica during the 80s and 90s.

And then there’s Doug Jones, who will be guiding the conversation. He’s an Atlanta local whose work has appeared in various anthologies and publications, and he’s a true talent in the literary world. He’s going to bring such a great energy to the discussion, making it even more insightful.
This in-person only event is happening on Friday, September 18, 2026, at the First Baptist Church of Decatur, located at 308 Clairemont Avenue in Decatur. Doors open at 6:30 PM, and the event kicks off promptly at 7:00 PM, so make sure you’re there on time to snag a good seat. Registration is required, so you’ll need to RSVP by getting a ticket.
When it comes to tickets, you have a few options, and prices will vary depending on your choice. You can grab a free ticket if you just want to attend without a book. If you’re ready to dive into “The Disappearers” right away, you can get a single ticket that includes a copy of the book. Or, if you’re bringing a friend, there’s a ticket option for two people that includes one book. If you choose the book option, just bring your ticket, digital or paper, to pick up your copy at the event. If for some reason you can’t pick it up that night, your book will be waiting for you at Charis Books and More, at 184 S. Candler Street in Decatur, for two weeks after the event. They’re also keeping things safe, capping attendance to allow for social distancing, and while masks aren’t required, they are strongly encouraged.
